       Local watercolor artist, Reiko Hervin, has added another honor to her long list of past achievements by having a sample of her work represented in a well-known watercolor series book, "Splash 9 - Watercolor Secrets." Published by North Light Books (F&W Publications), the book is the ninth in the "Splash" series, with the first published almost 15 years ago.
       "I like this book series," Hervin said. "The colors are spectacular, top of the national/international popular artists works are in the book and giving tips, variety of the subject matter and techniques. From time to time I use these books for my watercolor classes as a reference." she said, "And this time, it is even more exciting, 'Splash 9' has my painting in it."
       Acceptance to the publication was a long, drawn-out process for the artist. Starting in November 2004, Hervin submitted some color slides of her work for consideration and inclusion in the book, to the editor and artist, Rachel Wolf. It wasn't until late February 2005 that Hervin was informed her painting "When Time Stands Still-Iris" had been selected as one of the works for the popular publication.
       Now Hervin had her work cut out for her. She had to write about her work and how she uses her rich color to bring freshness to an often over-painted subject - the iris. She also had to have a transparency done from her original work, a piece that had already been sold to Ann Campbell, former owner of the Genoa Gallery. She had to borrow the work back and then find someone who could provide the transparency.
       "I was getting very frustrated with the situation," Hervin said. "Barry Jobe, at Lone Tree Gallery, told me to call Michael Nelson at Grafx 8."
       Nelson was already working with Hervin by producing the gicleé prints of her work so he went to work on this project, working closely with Rachel Wolf directly to make a digital file that could be used for the publication.
       "He adjusted the colors best for off-set printing and it was ready to go," Hervin said. "I couldn't have done all this without him."
       After a year-and-a-half process, Hervin received the package a few weeks ago containing the much anticipated book. As a contributor to the publication, Hervin can also distribute the book at a very reasonable price. The retail on the book is $35 but can be purchased through Hervin for $23.50.        The artist will also be participating in the Carson Valley Art Gallery Association's Second Saturday event Sept. 9-10 at the CVIC Hall where all seven Carson Valley galleries will represent artwork by artists they represent, as well as live music. This will all be in conjunction with the Minden Street Arts and Crafts Fair on Esmeralda Avenue.
